The archguitar has its roots in the Baroque archlute and theorbo, lutes which had an extended bass range. Originally conceived by Peter Blanchette, the 11 string archguitar was built like a guitar but sounded like an archlute. A more recent version built by Alan Perlman is played by James Kline.
For this archguitar the customer and I worked in close collabortion, extending the range to 13 strings, 8 strings on the neck and 5 floating sub basses. Strung with nylon strings, it can be tuned in any manor the player chooses.
