The 13 string Archguitar

The archguitar has its roots in the Baroque archlute and theorbo, lutes which had an extended bass range. Originally conceived by Peter Blanchette, the 11 string archguitar was built like a guitar but sounded like an archlute. A more recent version built by Alan Perlman is played by James Kline.

For this archguitar the customer and I worked in close collabortion, extending the range to 13 strings, 8 strings on the neck and 5 floating sub basses. Strung with nylon strings, it can be tuned in any manor the player chooses.

If you are interested in commisioning a custom harp guitar please let me know and we can discuss tunings, woods, inlay. etc. Every one is unique and built to custom order. If you would like more information feel free to contact me at Jim@WorlandGuitars.com

The back and sides are curly European (Bosnain) maple with Brazilian rosewood binding and a mahogany neck.

All of the 13 strings are tuned with 4:1 geared violin Peghed tuners. The lowest string is extended to allow a lower pitch.
